Canada Caregiver Credit

Who can you claim this credit for?

Do you support a spouse or common-law partner, or a dependent with a physical or mental impairment? The non-refundable, Canada Caregiver Credit (CCC) may be available for you.

You may also be able to claim the CCC if you support the following: your spouse or common-law partner, your or your spouse or common-law partner’s child or grandchild, parent, grandparent, brother, sister, aunt, uncle, niece, or nephew (if resident in Canada at any time in the year).

What does it mean by support?

Support means they needed your help regularly & consistently to provide them with some or all the necessities of life. This includes things like cooking, cleaning, dressing, bathing & shelter.

The amount you can claim depends on your relationship to the person for whom you’re claiming the CCC. As well as your circumstances, the person’s net income & what other credits the person may be claiming.

If you are caring for more than one person, you are eligible to make a claim for each person on your tax return.

If you pay child support for the dependent, you cannot claim the CCC. As well as you cannot claim the amount for the Eligible Dependent credit.

When filing your tax return, do not submit any supporting documents for your claim. Keep them in case the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) requests them at a later time.

The CRA may also request a letter from the doctor stating when the impairment began & what the expected duration of the impairment is.

For children under the age of 18, it should also state that the child is & will likely continue to be dependent on others for an indefinite duration. Additionally, because of their impairment, they need much more assistance for their needs & care then typical children of their same age.

The signed medical statement is not required if the CRA already has an approved T2201 Disability Tax Credit Certificate on file. Contact us to get a partial filled out T2201 to take to your doctor to fill out!
